Kamia F. Slaughter, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership, Policy,
and Law at ÂÜÀòÊÓƵ. She is a native of Loachapoka, AL which deeply
informs her work to advance college access and student success for rural learners.
She has taught and worked across P-20 education, nonprofit, and federal government
arenas. She earned her Ph.D. in Administration of Higher Education from Auburn University.
As a researcher, Dr. Slaughter investigates 1) the hidden and complex work of college
administrators and practitioners, local community members, and other stakeholders
in Black, rural communities; 2) the role of discourse in shaping ideas about Black,
rural students; and (3) the ways that Black, rural places are reflected in or erased
by postsecondary policies and practices. Additionally, she explores institutional
cultures within HBCUs and Black women’s experiences navigating academia. She enacts
her research agenda through a range of methodological approaches, more especially
grounded theory and narrative inquiry.
